Electric Tiger - FAQ

who the hell are you?

Electric Tiger is a slambient/dark ambient music group.

what is "slambient"?

Slambient (the term was coined in 1982, and recoined by others later) is a hard-edged variant of ambient and industrial music. Imagine, if you will, the well-known ambient work by Eno, Fripp, put a hard heavymetalesque edge on it, and you might get the idea. It's better to simply hear it.

who are your influences?

Influences? Well, Electric Tiger recognizes that ALL of the music that we have ever heard, from Dick Dale to Chopin to Ravi Shankar (et cetera ad nauseum) constitutes an influence. That includes music we hate.

well, who do you like then?

We like lots of artists in many different genres and styles... Faust, Amon Düül, Ravikiran, Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Steve Hillage, James Brown, Return To Forever, Kraftwerk, Seatbelts, Sex Pistols, Killing Joke, Him, System Of A Down, Srinivas, King Crimson und so weiter.

the virtue of chaos

In a world of too much regulation, restriction and order, chaos is freedom and much needed release. Music is the perfect medium for that. Too many want to control others too much. It seems to pandemic and intrudes upon music as well.

can you describe it?

That's a tough question indeed. We haven't quite figured how to do that. Several attempts have been made, but how does one describe mythical lightning tiger transcendence? We keep finding ourselves saying, "just listen to it".

have others described it?

Yes, they have.

well, what did they say then?

A couple of reviewers complained about a lack of melody. Others have said that it wasn't for the musically faint of heart. One reviewer said "LOVE". We like that. Here are some quotes that we thought were fun:

"TANZMUSIK - disco soaked in a vat of peyojuice!" - Pink Jimi Photon

"sounds like each instrument was sent through an old Roland Space Echo with lots of knob twiddling" - Bill (Progressiveears.com)

"industrial ambient music suggestive of David Bowie’s Low period only with some fangs." - Matt Rowe (MusicTap.net)

"Electric Tiger is something to listen to if you're open minded, but right off the bat if you're expecting melody, vocals, or anything like that then run away now." - Dustin Hupe (antiMUSIC.com)

"The group studiously avoids anything like a tune or regular rhythm, eschewing the typical (and pleasing) for the atypical (and irritating)." - Gerald Wandio (dprp.net)

doesn't that bother you, when they don't like it?

No. Should it? I mean, it's unrealistic to expect everyone to like it, as much as we wish they did. We just appreciate the fact that they took the time to listen to our music and review it.

what about the negative critiques?

sometimes, the very things which people dislike about it is precisely what we love about it. Basically, if we like the final product, then it's great. I love the sounds we generate. I think also that some people simply do not understand where we're coming from. We are really quite indifferent to things like harmony. melody and rhythm requirements that are used to define musical traditions. We just follow our creative impulses. There a no wrong notes.

what about theory?

theory is good if you're learning to play other people's compositions or master a particular tradition, but it's really not necessary.

huh?

yep. We don't even try to play in a key.

do you have any pictures of the band?
